The Foundation: Nels’ Legacy
The NELS VENERUS HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION was established in April of 2011 in memory of Nels Venerus, an integral player for the Flyers, and later, the Spokane Chiefs, winning Allan Cup championships in 1976 and 1980. The work of the Foundation ensures Nels’ legacy of giving and his love for hockey continues in our community.

The board and staff are all volunteers, and almost every dime donated goes to scholarships.
What do the scholarships cover?
Each fund has a different focus. The Nels Venerus Grant Fund and Preston Palanio Memorial Fund focus on covering a wide range of hockey-related expenses like gear, pay-to-play fees, etc.
The James Clancy Educational Fund provides financial assistance for older youth players seeking a traditional post-secondary education.
